Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of microfinance on the performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in District 13 of Kabul city. Given the significant role SMEs play in employment generation and economic dynamism in Afghanistan’s urban communities, they continue to face challenges such as limited access to financial resources, lack of proper credit infrastructure, and strict lending conditions from financial institutions. Therefore, evaluating the effectiveness of microfinance in enhancing SME performance is of great importance. The main objective of the research is to analyze how key components such as access to microloans, repayment terms, supplementary support (such as financial training and consulting), and credit rating systems influence performance indicators including profitability, sales growth, production capacity, and market expansion. This quantitative study collected data using a structured questionnaire, through simple random sampling from 302 owners and managers of SMEs in District 13 of Kabul. The data were analyzed using SPSS software and statistical tools such as descriptive analysis, Pearson correlation, multiple regression, and ANOVA. Findings reveal that microfinance has a significant and positive impact on SMEs’ financial and business performance. Moreover, flexible repayment conditions, financial literacy programs, and credit rating systems play a crucial role in building trust, reducing financial risk, and encouraging reinvestment. The study concludes by emphasizing the importance of expanding the microfinance system as one of the most effective mechanisms for supporting small and medium-sized enterprises in urban areas like District 13 of Kabul.
